About us

History of Hipotenusa

Hipotenusa publishes high-level mathematics books since 1990, all of them written by the peruvian mathematician PhD Jorge Saenz, who also happens to be the founder of the publishing house Editorial Hipotenusa in Venezuela.

These books were once considered an almost official text for teaching higher mathematics in Venezuela, and they were also used in other Hispanic countries due to their high pedagogical quality.

The humanitarian crisis in Venezuela in 2016 led to an exodus of the student population, a situation that threatened the survival of this publishing house. In fact, more than 90% of the bookstores disappeared during this period.

In 2019, Roberto Saenz, Jorge’s son, initiated a project to transform Editorial Hipotenusa, the publishing house, into a science education brand. The first objective is to translate the company’s books, which are Hipotenusa’s most valuable asset.

"Mathematics has given me everything I have"

-Jorge Sáenz

Jorge had the opportunity to teach mathematics at several universities across the continent, including Columbia and Notre Dame; yet his origins are very humble.

He grew up as one of the 70 million poor children in Latin America.

Prior to become a doctorate Mathematician, Jorge was a high school teacher in Peru. This experience taught him how to effectively communicate mathematical concepts to students of all levels.

Our Goal

Hipotenusa and Jorge share the same goal: supporting the professional development of young people from developing nations, thereby contributing to the progress of their countries.

In the future, information is open. That is why we intend to translate all our books, sharing their content freely on this website. Our goal is to reach as many readers as possible, establishing a vibrant community.
